Are Walmart's Made in the USA Products Fact or Fiction?
9/5/17
What can we learn about globalization through exploring America's largest retailer?
- We can learn how truly connected and disconnected this world is. Most of the products I looked at in Walmart mere made in China. However, a lot of the other products I looked at were made in a variety of other countries; these countries were often very small, and presumably not wealthy. It was much more rare to find a more "wealthy" country where in which a product was made. We can learn how desperate companies are to produce their products cheaply in order to sell more and therefore turn out a greater profit. It was rather difficult to find products made in the USA, and the majority of these products (made in the USA) were simple, and in a sense, basic. Somewhat surprisingly, a lot of products where not made in the country in which its "style" seemed to originate, or replicate.
- Its hard to really tell "what the world wants". This is mainly due to the fact that a "want" is an opinion. What do the poor people want? What do the rich people want? What do the owners of the sweat shops and the factories and the big businesses want? What does the human want? Most simply put, however, is that people want that in which they believe will better their own lives, and their own belief of well being. So, what does America produce that may better a person's life? Coal, Petroleum, Computers, Cars, Drugs, Electronics, Food, and the list goes on. My question is, which and how much of these products are given to the rest of the world compared to how much the USA keeps for its own people? America may trade with other countries and give some of what was requested as a need to them, but trade isn't without something in return. America can't produce everything the world wants, but it can produce some of what the world wants, to only some of the countries of the world, according to what the governments of said countries say its people need, if that country has something the USA wants.

QUESTION
Why should closing sweat shops do more harm than good?
In most cases, working in sweat shops is the best option for the people who work there. There are not many other options as far as work, and the other options can be much more brutal with even less pay than the sweat shops.

The most important things I have learned in this class were about the sweat shops and fair trade. i think this is because it really helped open my eyes to whats really going on in the poor countries and how the people feel about their situations. It also helped me connect the dots between how big american corporations are affecting the world. i would like to know if other county's big companies are outsourcing and what their ideas are.

Why Divide Labor?
Dividing labor is the most efficient way of creating products. A person may now focus on bettering their skills at that one specific job, rather than having to learn how to do the entire thing and possibly not being good at one section of creating that product. People may be able to learn their job much faster and also learn how to do their job extremely fast with very little error.

What can we learn about the benefits of globalization by fallowing the journey of a T-shirt?
By fallowing the journey of a T-shirt, we learn just how many jobs and opportunities become available to people across the globe that might not have otherwise been there for them. Globalization has the opportunity to help out many poor families and people, and can create jobs for them that would never have been a possibility without globalization, therefore giving possible improvement of quality of life.
